Depotting Smashbox SinglesAhoy there! Today I'm going to chat a bit about how to depot single smashbox eyeshadows. I'm a depotting fiend - I love having everything tucked neatly into palettes. Conveniently, smashbox single shadows are the same size as MAC shadows! You can snuggle them right on in with your MAC shadows in your palettes. Mmm, yum. They're a tad trickier to depot, however, if you've never done it before and/or don't like fire... Follow up:
So, originally I had made a video, but my camera hates life. Probably because it doesn't have a macro function. Unscrew the top from your shadow and set it aside (or chuck it, whatever). At the base of the hard plastic screwy part, it meets the rubbery black outside stuff. See that seam in between the two? What you want now is a fine-tipped knife or something of that sort to jam into that seam.
With your knife in there, carefully pry a bit until your hard plastic encasement around the shadow pan pops out of the rubbery outside part. Are you loving my technical speak?
Alright! Now what you're going to want is a candle, some means of setting fire to the candle's wick and some means of protecting yourself from the soon to be very hot plastic! I either am stupid and use my fingers (please don't be like me) or hold the edge of the plastic with a set of tweezers that I use for miscellaneous messy things. Probably your best bet would be to set the plastic pot atop a fork you don't mind sacrificing (check your dollar store for one if you need to!). Light the candle and use your means of choice to hold the pot of shadow so that the flame heats the plastic underbelly. The plastic will warm and melt. If you get it when it is just right, you can flip the pot over on a soft, clean surface, use some tweezers to hold the edge of the plastic pot and press on the middle of the bottom with something flat but thin so that the plastic bends and the metal pan pops out. If you're not confident about this and are in a well ventilated area, you can choose to deal with plastic fumes instead and simply let the fire melt a hole in the plastic. Then, when you flip the whole thing over and press on the metal pan through the hole in the plastic, the pan will definitely pop out. I've never found a smashbox shadow to be glued in to its pot in an excessive manner. From here, you can glue a magnet to the back of the pan. Hurray! This will then fit into your palette!!! If you want the original label, you can simply hold the bottom rubbery part a few inches above your hot flame for a few seconds (trust me, you'll feel the heat) and that will loosen the glue holding the sticker in place. Extinguish the candle, peel off the sticker and attach it to the bottom of your pan. Fin! If you want a video version of this, I'm more than happy to oblige, but someone either needs to send me a smashbox single or some money, as I don't have any more right now. |
